Authorities in Pennsylvania have rescued more than 60 dogs and two cats from a home in Fayette County after discovering the animals living in conditions of “extreme neglect.” The large-scale operation was carried out by Pennsylvania State Police with assistance from multiple animal welfare groups. As of now, the rescued animals are receiving medical treatment and care as authorities continue their investigation.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the case began in April. At the time, 39 dogs, including puppies, were surrendered to a local rescue organization in poor condition (via CBS News). As troopers continued to look into the situation, they obtained a search warrant for a property on Main Street in Belle Vernon.

When officers executed the warrant on Wednesday, they found 62 dogs and two cats inside the home. Rescue groups were immediately called in to help remove the animals and transport them to safety.

SWPA Humane Law Enforcement said its officers joined Angels of Mercy and the ANNA Shelter in assisting state police during the operation. In a Facebook post, the organization shared that the animals were removed from “conditions of extreme neglect.”

Among the animals rescued was a young puppy that remains under intensive veterinary care. SWPA assured the puppy is receiving “round-the-clock care” and that staff members are hopeful he will recover. At the same time, the ANNA Shelter, which helped care for the rescued animals, described the effort as an all-day operation. An Instagram post by the organization detailed how teams spent hours removing the animals from the property.

According to the organization, the dogs range in age from approximately three weeks to around eight years old. They added that the pups appear to be a mix of Labrador Retriever and Collie-type breeds.

The discovery came as a surprise to some nearby residents. Neighbor Jaclyn Naylor told KDKA that she was shocked to learn so many animals were living inside the property. “I hope these animals get better and they’re able to find homes,” Naylor said.

That goal is already underway. The ANNA Shelter expects the rescued animals to become available for adoption in phases once they have received the care they need. Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing and could take weeks due to the number of animals involved and the severity of the case.
