Overcoming deep emotional scars takes incredible patience when a young dog has only known human cruelty. That patience is exactly what Heidi gets in a video shared by @whitneysdogs, where the frightened German Shepherd puppy slowly begins to figure out that this person is not going to force anything on her.

The rescue puppy learns to trust at her own pace, and viewers get to witness it all. At first, even a feather touch is too much. Later, Heidi sniffs, sits nearby, offers a paw, and eventually kisses Whitney.

Heidi was only six months old when she arrived at the shelter as a stray with a scar around her entire muzzle. Shelter staff believed her mouth had been bound shut for a long period of time, possibly with something like rubber bands. The injuries may heal, but the fear she carried was going to take longer.

When Whitney enters Heidi’s kennel, there is no rush to make friends. She simply sits on the floor and lets Heidi decide how close is close enough. The puppy eventually lies nearby, though she keeps a little space between them. A gentle touch still makes Heidi jump, so Whitney backs off.

A few minutes later, they try again with the leash instead of a hand. The rescue puppy is still unsure, but she allows the soft scratches. Then something shifts. She starts investigating Whitney, sniffing her hand, trousers, and shoes.

She even stretches up and gives her a quick lick on the face. That little bit of confidence feels huge after watching her avoid eye contact earlier.

Heidi still has limits, and Whitney respects every one of them. When a hand reaches toward her head, and she startles, they simply go back to what works. Soon, Heidi sits beside Whitney, letting her pet her back and even offering the human a paw.

By the time it is time to leave, Heidi carefully allows Whitney to carry her out to the car. Once home, she looks noticeably more relaxed.

For a puppy who arrived afraid of being touched, that is a pretty big first step. And Heidi has finally landed somewhere she can keep taking those steps safely.
