For a dog, losing the home and people they know and love can be a deeply unsettling experience. Animals entering shelters after years with a family may not understand why their familiar routine has suddenly disappeared or why they have been left behind. That confusion is at the center of a video showing Shakira, a senior Belgian Malinois whose surrender has sparked an urgent plea to find her a new home.

Shelter dog is listed urgent after previous family surrenders her without remorse

A video shared by @lyssthepawfairy shows the emotional moments surrounding Shakira’s surrender at Baldwin Park Animal Care Center. The footage begins with the 7-year-old Belgian Malinois arriving at the shelter on a leash alongside her family.

Shakira appears close to the people who brought her there, but the situation quickly changes once she is inside the shelter. Text shown over the video claims that when Shakira tried to kiss her family, they pushed her face away. The video then shows her alone behind kennel bars as she adjusts to her new surroundings.

According to the post’s caption, the surrender was especially difficult to witness. The person who shared the video said Shakira’s family was reportedly “first in line to surrender her” and appeared to show “no remorse” before “walking away laughing.” What’s more, Shakira had seemingly no understanding that the people she knew were leaving her behind.

Her distress reportedly continued after the surrender. The caption says Shakira cried when she was taken to her kennel and “continued crying for days afterward.” Footage of her alone at the shelter captures some of the lonely moments she has experienced since being separated from her former family.

Now, Shakira has been listed as urgent, prompting an appeal for someone to help her leave the shelter. She is identified as a female Belgian Malinois, around 7 years and 6 months old, with the shelter ID A5749863. She is currently at Baldwin Park Animal Care Center.

The post also notes that Shakira appears to have had a litter of puppies at some point in her life. While her past is not fully known, she does best around calm dogs and would benefit from slow, careful introductions.
