Precious is only a year old, yet the scars along her back hint at a past nobody can fully explain. In the video shared by @voicesforcarolina_animals, the young shelter dog quietly eats treats from her elevated bed at Lancaster County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. As she leans forward, the long scar running down her back is impossible to miss. Once she finishes eating, she looks up at the volunteer filming her, revealing a sweet face behind all that uncertainty. She is shy, but she is still willing to look toward people.

Shelter dog’s scars leave her afraid but not without hope as she waits for a home

Precious is bent over her bed at the start of the video, focused on the treats waiting for her. The position also makes the scar along her spine clearly visible. She is just one year old. The camera pulls back to show her whole body, with the words on screen asking viewers to let that fact sink in: she’s only a year old.

Precious came into the Lancaster County Animal Shelter as a stray, and nobody knows what caused the scars covering parts of her body. After finishing her treats, she lifts her head and looks toward the volunteer. Her expression is gentle but cautious. The people who know her say she is shy and unsure at first, which is understandable given what she may have experienced.

Still, Precious is not completely closed off. Once she realizes someone means her no harm, the shelter dog can show a softer side. She is also good with other dogs, giving her another quality that could help her settle into the right home or foster placement.

Her story is difficult, but the details around her also leave some room for hope. She is heartworm negative, and the post says rescue pull fees have been sponsored. Transport help may also be available for approved adopters or rescues.

The shelter dog’s video has received more than 2,900 likes, with viewers already asking someone to give her a chance. One commenter simply wrote, “Sweetheart deserves a loving forever home.” Precious cannot change the scars she came into the shelter with. She can, however, get a life where they are no longer the first thing anyone sees.
