How much household knowledge can a curious dog really pick up? Quite a bit, as it turns out, when they are paying close attention to how things work. Dogs can learn to associate buttons, sounds, and movements with familiar outcomes. Although sometimes, a little luck may also be involved. In Billy, a young puppy’s case, that routine involves turning on a fireplace and settling in to watch the flames.
Puppy learns how to turn on the fireplace and sits watching it
Billy, a young Bernese Mountain Dog featured on the Instagram account @billythebernese0, appears to have taught himself a rather unexpected household skill. In a video, the pup stands in front of what appears to be an electric fireplace and uses his snoot to operate its button.
The dog’s effort seems to have the desired effect. After Billy interacts with the button, the fireplace switches on, and flames quickly appear. Soon enough, the pup sits nearby and watches the flames, appearing completely absorbed by the sight.
The video includes text explaining Billy’s unusual routine: “Billy taught himself how to turn the fire place on and likes to sit and watch.” The caption is equally fitting for the scene, reading, “Billy is ready for fall.”
The Bernese Mountain Dog puppy’s behavior makes the moment particularly amusing because he seems to have learned both parts of the routine. He not only knows how to activate the fireplace, but also appears to know exactly what he wants to do afterward: sit nearby and watch the flames. What may have started as simple curiosity has seemingly turned into one of his favorite activities.
The clip has also prompted viewers to speculate about what makes the fireplace so interesting to him. One person wrote, “I wonder what goes on his mind, when he sits there and watch them flames.”
Not every dog would necessarily be as comfortable around the fireplace, though. One viewer compared Billy’s reaction with their own Bernese, commenting, “Our Bernese would be scared of the button, and the fire.”
Another person joked about Billy’s apparent entertainment choice, writing, “Fire channel is the best.” Billy’s newfound ability also had some viewers looking ahead to what he might learn next. “Just wait until he learns to turn on the AC,” one commenter wrote.
